What is exfm?
Exfm is the best way to discover and share music on the Internet. To start, install the exfm extension. After installation just visit any site that contains mp3 files. Exfm will create a song library from the mp3s on that page. It will also automatically update your library with any new songs added to the page(s) you’ve visited, even if you don’t revisit the page. Additionally, you can Queue, Note, and Share songs to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, as well as email songs to friends.
How do I listen to music with exfm?
Head to any page with mp3s on it. A blue indicator will appear on the ex logo (in the upper right corner of Chrome) showing how many songs exfm has found on that page. Click on the exfm icon and a drop down showing all the songs on that page will appear. You can click the Play All button or play any individual song by clicking the play button next to its song title. You can Queue songs by clicking the plus mark. You can also play individual MP3 files directly on the page by click the triangle icon of the audio file.
How do I access my music?
Exfm can be accessed at any time by clicking the ex logo in the upper right corner of Chrome, then clicking the HOME button. From there you can access any of these views:
- Recent Activity: Lists all the songs you’ve shared or noted, as well as songs the people you are following have shared or noted.
- Library: Lists all the tracks in your library - this view has two separate views: list view and pane view.
- Queue: Lists queued songs and the order they will be played.
- Noted: Lists your noted songs and noted songs by people you follow on exfm.
- Profile (Username): Clicking on this will take you to your public profile page (ex.fm/yourusername)
- Settings: This section allows you to create an account on exfm, link your other social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, scrobble tracks to Last.fm, as well as change settings such as desktop notifications, keyboard shortcuts, and more.
How can I organize my music?
The best way to keep track of the songs you really love is by noting them. Every song you note is added to the noted tab in your extension or to your noted page (ex.fm/yourusername). From there you can quickly scan your favorite tracks and find the exact one you want to hear.
Can I note songs without having an account?
Yes, but you will need to have the extension installed. Noted songs without an account will not be available on a public profile page. If you create an account after noting any songs, you will have the option to transfer those noted songs to your account. That will also make them available on your exfm profile page.
Can I follow other exfm users? And what does that mean?
Absolutely! Click follow on their ex.fm profile - every song they note will appear in your noted tab as well. This is a great way to keep up with what your friends like as well as discover new music.
Where do I find people to follow?
Access the Recent Activity pane by clicking the ex logo in the upper right corner of Chrome, then clicking the HOME button, then clicking the exfm logo. On the right hand side of the page under the Site of the Day is a search box to find friends to follow. You can also access the Find Friends search box on your Noted pane and scrolling to the bottom of your existing followers.
Where else can I find music to add to my library?
A great place to start is the home page of the extension. We feature a new site every day and have some permanent great music site links on that page. Simply click on any of those links to get started. We also aggregate all of your music activity on the home screen - any new songs noted by the people follow are in the Recent Activity section, as are any songs shared to Tumblr, Facebook or Twitter. Once you’ve checked out the sites on the home page, surf to your favorite music blog. You can also check out our blog: blog.extension.fm. We post a new site every day with great music playable within exfm. You can check out all the sites we’ve ever posted here: blog.extension.fm/tagged/siteoftheday. We also post every site of the day to our twitter feed: twitter.com/exfm. Two other great places to find music are soundcloud.com and bandcamp.com. We’re constantly adding new sites!
Can I scrobble music to Last.fm?
Definitely! Go to the Settings page in the extension to connect your account with Last.fm and your tracks will start scrobbling!
There’s music on the page, why won’t it play?
Exfm works by identifying mp3 files on the pages you visit. Plenty of sites (Myspace, Pandora) offer streaming music in other formats - those songs won’t play in the extension and won’t be added to your library. We do offer a way (via our API: extension.fm/api) for sites using different formats to allow the songs to be accessed with exfm, but it is up to those sites to use our API.
Is there a Firefox version of exfm?
Exfm is currently Google Chrome only. A Firefox plugin for exfm is in the works, but we do not have a set release date.
Can exfm play mp3 files that are already on my computer?
Not yet. We hope to add this in the future.
Exfm crashed. Now what?
Restarting Chrome typically fixes any issues with exfm. If it doesn’t, let us know at support.extension.fm. We’d also love it if you notified us when it crashed by submitting an error log:
- To submit an error log:
- Open exfm.
- Click on the “Settings” link.
- Click on the “Log” text on the bottom left of the Settings Page.
- Click “Report This” button under the log text - you can optionally submit your email address and we’ll notify you with an answer to your issue.
Can I rearrange the songs in my queue, or create multiple playlists?
At present you can delete individual tracks from your queue, but exfm doesn’t support reordering tracks or playlists. We’d love to have this in the product and will work towards making the happen in the future.
Can I stop exfm from loading the mp3s on a particular site that I visit regularly?
You can’t currently prevent a site that you visit from being added to your library, but you can stop the auto-update for a particular site so that exfm doesn’t automatically add that site’s new tracks to your library:
- Open the exfm library tab.
- Change to All Songs grid view.
- Right click (control+click for Macs) on the site name in the Sites column.
- Uncheck the auto-update checkbox.
You can also delete sites at any time from your library. Deleted sites will no longer add any new songs to your library.
